Fuzzball

I’ve got a project I need to make some headway on so the sketches are probably going to be even quicker and looser this week than normal. Shorter posts, too.

the society of failed supervillians: the Schemer

Introducing the latest entry into The Society of Failed Supervillians

A failed designer, X-Acto decided to take revenge on the rest of the world for not understanding his greatness. The eventual realization that all his evil conceptualizations weren’t going to come to fruition until he found someone else to take care of the details brought him to the Society. Now he spends all his time concocting plans for complete world domination! Unfortunately, by the time the plans are actually put into effect every other member of the Society has had a say and what was once a plan for total domination becomes an attack on the local laundromat/sandwich counter. *sigh* No one understands…

Fou Fou

I blame today’s sketch on a current order I have in to KidRobot. I’d love to do a toy line someday. Don’t know much about how to go about doing it but maybe, just maybe. Let me add that to the list.

Also, for some reason. I have “Oo-da-lolly, Oo-da-lolly, golly what a day” on repeat in my brain. Awesome.

I’m Back

Hey all. Welcome back to, uh, me. (Well, that’s not me but you get the point…)

I had a great vacation. Did some cool things. Got some cool things. Celebrated one year of The Wife. Now I’m back at work and I know I had a successful vacation because I don’t mind. I had enough time off to unwind a bit but not so much unwinding that coming back in was a chore. Excellent.

Juri Crazy Good Artist

First: Today’s sketch really has nothing to do with the rest of the post.

So yesterday I told you about the dark and raw artist whose stuff I discovered at Otakon. Today you get the other end of the spectrum, Juri Hayasaka. When I walked past this young lady’s booth I had to turn around and do a double take. Her work is absolutely gorgeous, the kind of stuff that makes me feel like an absolute hack.

Juri’s little, unpretentious table was filled with more good art than any other full row of tables I walked past. Her pen and ink sketches were absolutely beautiful, better than much of the finished art I was seeing sold at other tables. And the crazy part? She was selling them for only 1-3 DOLLARS. I… ju… y’know, all I’m going to do is keep gushing over her work. really just go look at it for yourself. She focuses a lot on fairy tales and legends and someday I hope to own and original of her work.

Oogily Boogily

Well, I got to experience Otakon from the inside for the first time this weekend. As a thank you for putting them up for the con Oni & Harknell snagged me an extra pass. Uhm, wow. I don’t know if I ever need to do it again but I did find a couple cool new folks in the artist alley. One I will have to pimp out tomorrow because I forgot her business card but the other is the gentleman whose work is responsible for the drawing you see above.

Gus Fink’s table was right across the aisle from Oni & Harknell and it was the kind of indy stuff I like. Dark, twisted and raw. He had a lot of cool original work including prints, paintings and comics but the ones that really caught my attention were his his toy designs, especially Boogily Heads.

I wish I had taken more money to drop because I would’ve spent most of it at his table.
