When I chose The Empire Strikes Back as the fifth desktop I thought it would be perfect. I mean, the last week of January, snow on the ground… yeah. I’ve had 50-some degree weather the past few days. Not that I’m complaining, mind you but Hoth-like my winter has not been.

Oddly enough the fourth and final choice was the first desktop I did: Dune. I love Dune, the books, the movies, the toilet paper (oh hey, there’s another movie I should do). I was watching the Sci-Fi (or SyFy) miniseries when I came up with the idea for this project. It’s been killing me to wait this long to put it up. What do you mean you DON’T like Dune? May your blade chip and shatter.

No, really.

Ok, so I’m not going to go with the obvious desktop every time. Some of these are going to be fanboy in-jokes so you can put them on your screen at work. For example, the above desktop which is my interpretation of the leaky T.C.R.I. canister that turned 4 ordinary turtles into…you know the story.

I love Blade Runner. So do a lot of you apparently, since it was voted your second favorite choice. See here if you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Blade Runner was the first Blu-ray we purchased when we made the upgrade to HD a few years back. My plan is to eventually spend a day watching every version back-to-back and compare notes. Or not. In all honesty what I’m looking for is an excuse to sit around and do pretty much nothing.

So here we go, the first desktop of the new year chosen by popular opinion, Star Wars.

As you may notice the style is a little different than what you are used to getting from me, thought I would try something new. The point of this venture is to provide something interesting while not cluttering up the your screen and making it hard to read file names. What do you think?

Look for a new desktop each week. I’ll aim for Mondays because I’m hoping these will be fun little starts to your week. However, if I miss a Monday check back later in the week. I probably just thought it needed more work (or it was a holiday). But let’s face it you are probably just subscribed to the RSS feed, right.

It is back to work for me today after a short little vacation with The Wife. I won’t bore you with the details but lets just say what was sitting and waiting for me when I got to the office did nothing to increase my calm.

One of the things I like best about being a cartoonist is the ability to act out those completely unrealistic impulses in a completely harmless fashion through my drawings. However, this morning I was about a half an inch away from making the the above illustration a reality (but I’d prefer to keep my job).

I shall quickly explain away this morning’s sketch inspiration by way of a link to NPR where you can listen to Muppets: The Green Album yourself.

My in-laws were over Saturday afternoon to see our new house. The Wife asked me to cut up the jalapenos for the salad accompanying our steak. I did so. Then I washed my hands. Followed by showing my Father-in-Law something while lunch was being prepared. Then I washed my hands again. Eating commenced, was delicious and then completed. The washing of the hands happened again.

A few minutes later the beer I had decided it was time to leave and I excused myself to use the facilities and did so. (I also washed my hands after that but it isn’t really germane.) Shortly after I discovered a burning sensation originating from my nether region. Now, I am a faithful man so I knew said burning was not the result of a red light rendezvous.

That knowledge however didn’t help me figure out what was going on for a good 15 minutes or so. During which time I became (understandably) irritable with the attention span of an addle-brained goldfish. Unfortunately my in-laws started to think this had something to do with their presence and not some unseen irritation I didn’t feel like announcing to the world (well, at that time anyway).

At this point I had deduced what happened, informed my wife discreetly and excused myself again to look up remedies. I knew to drink milk after eating hot food (I AM from outside of Buffalo originally) but surely it wouldn’t be applicable as a topical aid (it is). With relief in site I went back up stairs to the sound of muffled snickers and the new found knowledge that my beloved sucks at keeping secrets (which was a good call because I hadn’t realized my mood was making our guests feel like they were no longer welcome).

Meekly, I poured myself a glass of milk and excused myself for one final time to wash most delicate of areas (particularly at this point). The relief was instantaneous and we were able to have a good laugh about it for the remainder of the visit. But I’m sure if you’ve made it this far I suppose you are looking for a moral to this story and I would have to say it is this:

If you ever come over for a visit bring your own glassware because I can’t remember which one I used.

So, after yesterday’s post I kwickly received a request from my old partner dern for a Murder Koala. I have no idea where this request came from but that didn’t mean it wasn’t immediately on my list. Blame him…

…or reward him. Dern, and his current HWC partner Obsidian, are raising funds for a to create a pirating board game named Scurvy Dogs. D has been working toward getting this game produced since I met him. If you are into pirates and/or board games think about backing their kickstarter and help get it made.
