MECHADERN

Today’s WoD submission was for a mechanized version of my old partner dern (specifically MECHADERN!). Robots aren’t really my thing but I’m pretty happy with the line I walked on this one. It’s funny though, that I’m a month-plus out from being the artist at Hello with Cheese and I’m still drawing dern.

John Gruber Caricature

I’ve been having a hard time sitting down to draw lately (as evidenced by the lack of posts). Well, earlier today I took a page out of the Super Art Fight playbook and asked the folks on twitter to Wheel-of-Death me. And boy did I get some interesting responses (but that’s for later posts). The drawing above came from my buddy and fellow illustrator Lee Cherolis. He suggested I find someone I’m not familiar with and draw their caricature. I’ve never considered caricatures a strength and it’s been a long time since I tried so I took it as a good idea.

Now at the time I was listening to the latest MacBreak Weekly podcast and I realized that even though I subscribe to his blog, daringfireball.net I had no idea what guest John Gruber looked like. So five seconds later and a tappity-tap on google I had my resource photos. Shortly after that, what you see above.

II is coming up strong

Follow me.

So, I’m a big enough man to admit when I am wrong and WOW was I wrong. I love Matt Smith as the Doctor and Karen Gillan as his companion. Quite honestly I was won over as he yelled, “Geronimo” at the end of End of Time. I drew this while sitting around at Balticon about a month ago. (Drawing Doctor Who while sitting around at a SciFi convention, big stretch there.) Anyway, just colored it up. Enjoy.

I Noticed a Burn

burn-notice

I love me some Burn Notice. It’s just great summer fun. So I went ahead and drew it. Not much else to elaborate on there.

As a side note, y’know I started to feel bad when I didn’t have anything ready to post yesterday but then I remembered that I stopped doing a comic so I didn’t have to hold a schedule. So, I just thought I would say officially this is going to be an I’ll-update-it-when-I-have-something kind of blog. Most likely that will be multiple times a week but I’m just not going to promise daily posts.

Great & Powerful O

SALLYWIGGLES!

So today is the first day of the new Hello with Cheese artist and since I don’t think I’ve mentioned him here before I wanted to make sure I did. I really like what I’ve seen of O’s work. I have yet to make it through Commissioned‘s archive but I very much like his work and sense of humor. I think it is a perfect fit for dern and HWC. I’ve sneaked a peek so I know some of what he is bringing to the table and it is pretty awesome.

His first HWC comic went up this morning and while it is a work of art, be warned you can not un-see it. Also be sure to pop over to Commissioned to see how he and dern came to an understanding as to the terms of their partnership.

Babylon 5

Babylon 5 sketches

I don’t usually post things from my tv sketchbook. I primarily reserve that one for half thoughts while, appropriately enough, sitting in front of the tv. However, this weekend I did some interpretations of some of the Babylon 5 cast as I was watching the dvds I borrowed from a friend during a fantastic rainy Sunday. I don’t mind sharing them.

The Original Casino Royale

Watch out for Jimmy Bond.

I’ve been on a James Bond kick lately. Reading the books, rewatching the movies… good times. One movie I had not seen until last night was the original version of Casino Royale done as a farce back in 1967. What a crazy movie. I really enjoyed it but I spent a whole lot of time scratching my head. I think I may have to watch the more recent version later this week to get my head straight.
Anyway, if you are wondering what that has to do with the sketch above, it was based off the promotional posters for the movie.
