And Away We Go…

Frances and Friends banner

Alright party people, I have just been informed that Frances & Friends page is now up and ready to go. So head on over to ClickWheel.net and check out the next stage in my cartooning career.

Frances & Friends is a “clickbook” animated feature which basically means you control the speed of the animation. You can either download the separate panels to your iPod and navigate through using the device’s clickwheel or download the PDF to your computer and make your way through using the up and down arrows on your keyboard.

And remember after the story’s end keep clicking to see the final stage of the Pic of the Week caption contest.

Thanks for all the support and be sure to come back and tell me what you think.

Holding Pattern

no launch

Due to circumstances beyond my control Frances & Friends did not launch this morning.

It is in the wings ready and waiting. Unfortunately, because of last minute bugs in the site ClickWheel was unable to finish my page yesterday. I have been told that they are doing what they can to still launch the cartoon at some point later today.

I will make another post later today when that happens.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Importance of Drawing People

80s Guy

Just wanted to post a quick little response to Dawn’s comment on Monday’s post. Have I considered doing a cartoon with people? Yes. In fact I have started and scrapped at least 3 concepts after just a few strips. The problem comes not from my ability to draw people but my inability to write good dialog.

I would say my strength lies in pantomime and/or gag cartooning which is much easier to pull off with animals because you don’t expect them to talk. Where I tend to stumble over creating words, creating actions comes natural. There are exceptions to the animal rule though.

In fact, I just came to an agreement yesterday with ClickWheel involving a new cartoon. Along with publishing a monthly Frances & Friends cartoon with them I will be supplying a new single panel cartoon for their monthly anthology. The cartoon will star a young boy named Winston Millicent Delano and will also debut next month (though I don’t have a specific date).

The young gentleman I have drawn above is not Winston. He is just some random dude from the 80s.

Take My Picture

camera

Someone said something about wanting me to bring back the Pic of the Week right?

Well I just talked to my editor yesterday and it turns out I will be able to bring it back at the new site. The final delivery will be different (a monthly payoff instead of weekly) and we need to figure out where and how it will all happen BUT the Pic of the Week and Caption Contest shall return.

Here’s what I need from you:

First, more pictures. I have switched computers since I last did the pic of the week and I no longer have any that were sent back in the Bassetville days. For now send your pictures to my old bassetville address, potw@bryanprindiville.com.
(By submitting photos for use the Pic of the Week contest you are giving me permission to reuse said submissions in future Frances and Friends related productions.)

Second, let you friends know we’re back. The more people submitting captions and pictures the more fun this is for everyone.

I will start running the Pic of the Week contest on February 3rd for use in the initial March 4th Frances & Friends episode. Start sendin’ ‘em in.

Sneak Peek

Profiles

So I promised that I would give you all a sneak peek at the new material and here it is. The profile sheet for the character redesigns. I guess I could give you a little information to go with those drawings too, huh?

Well, you should be able to recognize most of the characters. The changes that have been made have not been too drastic. A little marking change here, a little color tweak there. A little more detail for the real lifers. In fact only one of the characters is completely new. Who can tell me which one that is and which one is a redesign of a very old b-ville character?

As you can see in the first panel I’m calling this new venture the evolution of Bassetville. Sort of a reimagining. While I very much liked the characters I created I was not happy with how the original strip was going. I felt trapped. After a year (more or less) off I have found my mojo and have decided to start over. A new format, style and episode type. I will not go into details about that yet because I am still developing the Frances & Friends feel. But I can tell you, my editor likes it.

Yes, I said editor. I am no longer in this alone. Readers of this blog should be able to guess pretty easily where Frances & Friends home will be when it launches. All I can say is that I am very excited about this new opportunity and I can not wait until (sometime in the spring) when everything goes live.

The only bad news I have is for those of you anxiously awaiting the return of the caption contest. I cannot promise that it will return with the new cartoon. Although… if enough of you make your case for its return in the comments section I may be able to work something out with my new distributor.

No promises.

A note from Frances

Bored Frances

Yeah, I’m getting bored waiting for him to post something new, too. He swears there is something big coming but he just has to work out the details. He was jumping around yesterday about how “they” liked it. Who is this they and are they bringing me any food?

He sure is in the office a lot, just like he used to be. I’ve seen him working on something oddly familiar but different all at the same time. It is taking him a lot longer to get things done too. I think he is planning on doing a sneak peek of the new work next week. At least the characters and one of them looks a lot like me.

It’s a good thing I have a mommy now, maybe she will feed me.
