Need a Shave

No Shave Monster

Yes, I actually can tell you where this sketch came from.

No, I can’t tell you what it actually is.

This morning I was thinking about one of my favorite webcomics, Creatures in my Head. (Really, that is probably plenty of an explanation but I don’t know when to stop.) Andrew’s work has been a big influence on me, especially since I stopped Bassetville a year ago last November. I love its randomness set upon a theme.

I’ve wanted to do a take on his work for the fan art category for a while but I can’t very well draw a creature from his head, can I? So I figured one from mine should work just as well. So here is a creature from my head.

When you get a chance, check out some of his.

Importance of Drawing Everything Else

pencil man

Yet again I remind you, 99% of the time I have no idea what I am going to draw until the pencil hits the paper. I don’t know, maybe this is a self portrait of a sort.

Maybe?

Just a reminder, we are over halfway through the week. I have gotten some great captions but I want more! (Yeah, I’m greedy.) So swing by this week’s PotW and show some puppy love.

Importance of Drawing People

80s Guy

Just wanted to post a quick little response to Dawn’s comment on Monday’s post. Have I considered doing a cartoon with people? Yes. In fact I have started and scrapped at least 3 concepts after just a few strips. The problem comes not from my ability to draw people but my inability to write good dialog.

I would say my strength lies in pantomime and/or gag cartooning which is much easier to pull off with animals because you don’t expect them to talk. Where I tend to stumble over creating words, creating actions comes natural. There are exceptions to the animal rule though.

In fact, I just came to an agreement yesterday with ClickWheel involving a new cartoon. Along with publishing a monthly Frances & Friends cartoon with them I will be supplying a new single panel cartoon for their monthly anthology. The cartoon will star a young boy named Winston Millicent Delano and will also debut next month (though I don’t have a specific date).

The young gentleman I have drawn above is not Winston. He is just some random dude from the 80s.

Time Keeps on Tickin’ tickin’ tickin’

watch

Two weeks to go until the Frances & Friends launch and I’m getting itchy. Spent last night converting the premier episode to an easy to view PDF version for those of you who won’t be downloading the cartoon to an ipod. Not sure I’m happy with the outcome yet but at least I still have a little time to figure it out.

Eep.

Brain still asleep.

See yesterday’s PotW post for cuteness and leave a caption.

PotW: Brittany Puppy

Puppy

This week’s PotW come from a contact of mine at American Brittany Rescue. I am doing some illustration work for them at the moment and they have supplied me with reference photos that I can also use for the Pic of the Week.

I couldn’t help myself.

As always leave caption submissions down in the comments.

Another Myth Busted

Mythbusters

I love Mythbusters. I can’t get enough of the show. This is the second time I’ve drawn them for the blog but I took a much different approach to Adam and Jamie this time. Much better result, I think.

Sorry about that whole no post thing yesterday. I usually do the posts and sketches first thing in the morning when I get to work. Yesterday work was closed due to weather and then I ended up somewhere without the proper equipment. So no post.

I figured I’d make up for it today. Same number of posts, different day.

My biggest regret though is that I didn’t get a chance to say Hello to all the visitors that came over from Silent Kimbly yesterday. Ryan posted a little piece of fan art I had done. Long time readers may recognize it but you could always go give it another look, just for fun.
