Pukeko

pukeko

One of my friends in New Zealand asked me what kind of pictures I wanted for the Pic of the Week contest. She started rattling off a bunch of indigenous species, most of which I recognized. Pukeko, however, left me without a clue. So, of course. I needed to look it up.

Cool lookin’ bird.

I’d love to go to Australia or New Zealand and see kangaroos, koalas and other fascinating animals. I think an Australian safari would be great.

Sweet!! Looks awesome, Bry – good job. We *love* seeing the Pukeko around…just gorgeous in person.

Maureen, none of those animals here, so you’d definitely have to go to OZ. In fact, NZ has no indiginous mammals! Just really really weird looking birds and insects. And plants. And reptiles…

Nice sketch of a Pukeko Bryan! You are very talented and have captured the Pukeko humour well. They are wonderful birds and great characters. I have a pet Puke called Kiku. If you’d like to read about her and see her photo please check out my blog at the website address above. Cheers, Gabby

I think Pukeko’s are great looking birds. I have found a place in Auckland near Pigeon Mountain that is a breeding ground for them.
