Order of the Stick

I got into Order of the Stick totally by accident. I went to meet one of my friends for lunch while he was in town for Balticon about 3 years ago. He had partaken in a bit too much of the sauce the night before so he wasn’t exactly moving when I showed up.

To kill time while my buddy joined the ranks of the living I decided to wander into the dealers room. After wandering past a bunch of vendors I had no interest in I ran across Rich’s Order of the Stick table. Since his was the only webcomic presence at the con I hung out there for a while and talked with him (and his girlfriend whose name escapes me at the moment).

Now I had never read OotS (I’m getting lazy) up to that point. Rich was not have stellar sales that weekend and he was vocally disappointed in that fact so I figured what the heck and I bought his first collection. Wow was it good.

Yes, it is stick figure art.

Yes, it is fantasy game based.

Yes, it is really really funny.

Yes, you should go check it out.

Least I Could Do

I’ve been reading Least I Could Do for a few years now. I don’t remember when I started but it was at least one artist ago. When Lars deSouza first took over the art for the comic I wasn’t really happy with the change. This is by no means a shot against his ability. He is awesome. I just didn’t like his take on the characters. Thankfully I stuck around through those first few weeks because he changed it up slightly and it fits the writing perfectly.

The writing, done by Ryan Sohmer, is also quite excellent. His diverse set of characters in orbit around the central pull of Rayne is entertaining day in and day out. And you get it 6 days a week. The comic is only the beginning, too. Being the man behind Blind Ferret Entertainment Ryan comes at webcomics as an entrepreneurial force. Search the site an you will find secondary comic ventures, active forums and goodies galore.

Add on top of that he is a nice guy. The only interaction I ever had with him was a mediocre (at best) design I sent him one of the times he was looking for help rebuilding the website. He worked with me a little back and forth. Didn’t like where I was going with the design and let me off the hook all while being very professional and gracious. It is nice to work with folks like that.

Alien Stick Up

Hey, look at that. A weekend post.

I was sitting in a meeting Friday while someone was reading back to me the entirety of a document I had been sent and READ before the meeting. Needless to say my mind wandered. Originally these two were on separate parts of the page. I just decide they worked to well together to not get equal screen time.

Irregular Webcomic

Irregular Webcomic… while I’m sure this name was picked for the writer’s tendency to jump from story line to story line with occasionally intersecting plots it is one of the mostest wrong titles in the history of title making. (Yeah, I really did just write that and no I don’t apologies for it. Nyah.)

IWC is consistently funny, smart, engaging, intelligent and updated. Not only that but if a joke is above my head (which they often are) David Morgan-Mar often gives the background for the joke in his annotations. Not so much explaining the joke but getting you up to an equal playing field with the rest of the class.

Created using photographs of Lego figures, gaming miniatures, the creator himself and occasionally original artwork this is one of my favorite reads.

New Friends

Over the past week or so Frances has been making friends with new dogs in the adjoining neighbor hood. One a basset (Watson) and the other a beagle (Jack). In honor of that here is a quick little basset sketch I did in the margins of my notebook yesterday (hence why it is so small).

I like meeting webcomic artists. There is just something really fun about meeting people who spend a large amount of time doing the same thing you do. Even if it is on another level. A couple years ago I bribed Danielle Corsetto into a sit down with the promise of Dim Sum.

Danielle is a fantastic artist and has recently taken to using her comic, Girls with Slingshots as her means to pay the bills. Quite literally. Which is good for us so to make donating worth her reader’s while she has gone to updating 5 days a week.

This has made my wife happy and in turn, me happy.
